Because of the Club’s  annual UK holiday – this time at York – members had meetings on successive Thursdays. The holiday also hit the bowls team who were not at full strength in their last match of the season at Appleton Probus and narrowly lost by 65-63. The team had previously won their last three matches against Appleton at home (101 – 86), Weaver (56-44) and Church Hulme (96-93) to finish  the season  with 15 wins and six defeats.

Terry  Parkinson won the Club  Bowls Handicap Knock-0ut competition beating Roger Collins in the final 11-9 and was presented with the trophy by the Club President.  The annual Walkers v Bowlers Fun Day is today (Oct 4) with the three miles walk around Arley Hall starting  from  The Spinner and Bergamott at 10a.m. The bowls match will follow lunch.

 

The walks groups had outings at Baslow, Gawsworth, Chelmorton  in Derbyshire and Morley Green over the last few weeks.

 

Looking ahead the golfers meet Tatton Probus at Knutsford Golf Club on October 11 while the 50th Anniversary lunch has attracted almost 100 .per cent  membership on October 18. Club lunches will be held on November 8 and December 11.

 

Speakers at the last two meetings were Mike Hewitt on “Tolstoy – The Anarchist” and John Scarrott whose talk was about “Granada-The Early Years”.  Mr Hewitt , who visited Russia  for Chenobyl  Children’s Charity, gave a detailed account of Tolstoy’s life – born in 1828 into a wealthy family,he lost his parents when young, lost half  of his inherited estate through gambling, joined the Russian Army, wrote about war and became the first accredited war correspondent.

 

His experiences in war led him to becoming a pacifist and eventually a spiritual anarchist, shunning the established Russian Church. Married  with 13 children, he wrote numerous novels the best known being “War And Peace” and “Anna Karannina”. He died in 1910.

 

Mr Scarrot was a cameraman with Granada  and was involved with “Coronation Street” for many years. He illustrated his talk with some photographs of “The Streets” cast and staff enjoying the 10th and 25th anniversary celebrations’

The speaker at the next meeting on October 11 will be Chris Holden and his subject “The Story of the Royal Charter”.
