Click on Title to expand……..Tributes were paid at the last meeting to two members of the Club , who died in December. Jack Martland, a retired member , was 92 while John Whittaker, 85, leaves his wife , Evelyn,and three sons and a daughter.

Mr Martland became a “Walks” leader in the club while Mr Whittaker was a well known potato farmer in the area.

In the business of the meeting Jim Flett reported that 12 members had attended an IT meeting at which Jerry Bentley gave a talk on wifi in the home and how it worked.

The discussion group had a lively meeting on the subject “Politics-do we need a shake-up of our attitude to Parliament etc”. The next meeting of the group will be on February 5.

Terry Parkinson reported on the 6.5 miles walk at Dunham Village whilke Andrew Allan gave details of the six mile walk at Lymm.

On the social side   the luxury tea  for members and their wives at the Brasserie Blanc is a sell-out while Richard Fenby gave details of the trip to Waters’ Mass Spectrometry in Wilmslow on February 12 and the final Bridge night of the winter at the Knutsford Golf Club on March 1.

Bill Frith revealed that almost 90 people attended the British Heart Foundation’s mulled wine and mince pie event and raised £!000.

Among other social events planned is a trip to Chester Zoo organised by Mike Johnson.

The AGM of the Club will be held on February 28 and will be followed by lunch.

The speaker was Ray Lowe who gave an interesting and detailed talk on Sir Bernard Lovell. His wife,Anne, had been Sir Bernard’s housekeeper for eleven years and Ray became a close friend of the scientist who, Ray revealed  was very interested in music and cricket.

Ray took members through Sir Bernard’s life from 1913, his school days and his time at Bristol University before accepting a post of assistant lecturer at Manchester University. When the war broke out in 1939 he worked for the War Ministry on radar and after the war went back to Manchester Universitywhere he eventually built  the telescope at the University’s botanical science park at Jodrell Bank.
