The Club lost a valuable member with the death of Kevin Willett at the age of 84. Kevin was the crown-bearer of the first post war May Queen in 1947 and maintained his interest in the Royal May Day Parade to the end. A great supporter of the Club’s Discussion and Bridge Groups Mr Willett was an ex-policeman who served in the Lancashire and Cheshire forces where he rose to the rank of Inspector.

At the last meeting the Club welcomed a new members Bruce Snowdon.

The Bowls team continued their run of successes with wins over Alderley Edge 117-66 and Church Hulme 97-60 so that with eight matches to play they have won 11. drawn one and lost four.

Jim Flett hopes to take a large party of members to St Peter’s Church , Heysham, and Heysham Power Station on October 8. Decisions have to made by August 22 because because of security arrangements at the Power Station.

The Club’s walkers had a great outing to Lyme Park where they climbed to the Lantern and then on to the highest  point on the Gritstone Trail where they had superb views of Liverpool Cathedral in the north and the Wrekin in the south.

Professor Mike Davies gave a talk on climate change and the frightening prospects that lie ahead for our grandchildren if something is not done by governments.. He said that we have the knowledge, the tools and possibly the time to address this. But what is lacking is the political will to tackle the problems which could ultimately lead to humans destroying their own planet.
