The Club’s meeting on 10th October included a fascinating and entertaining talk by club member, Jerry Bentley about the colourful life of Lord Cochrane who was a Royal Navy flag officer, mercenary and radical politician. He was a daring and successful captain of the Napoleonic Wars successful in almost all his naval exploits. Unusually, he was an Admiral in three different fleets, the Chilean Navy, the Brazilian Navy and finally the Royal Navy. It was noted that Lord Cochrane’s life and activities inspired naval fiction of 19th and 20th century novelists, such as C. S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O’Brian’s protagonist Jack Aubrey.

The Club has been very busy in recent weeks and activities have included an outing to Heysham to visit the Saxon origin St Peter’s Church and a tour of the nearby nuclear power station and the annual Walkers’ and Bowlers’ day walking in the morning, lunch at the Spinner & Bergamot and a bowls match in the afternoon. Reports on these events were given at the Club’s meeting on 10th October along with reports of the regular activities.

The IT group met prior to the Club meeting and enjoyed an informative presentation about Ordnance Survey given by an external speaker, Keith Stevens, who covered the history of mapping in the UK and why the UK is the most mapped place in the world. The topic for the recent meeting of the Discussion Group was “What has happened to democracy” which resulted in a lively debate.

The Club calendar is very busy in the weeks through to end of the year with the annual golf match, quarterly Club lunch, bowlers’ annual dinner, Christmas walk in Tatton Park and lunch, Christmas concert at Tatton and the Christmas lunch at Statham Lodge. The Discussion Group will focus on the collapse of Thomas Cook when it meets in early November.
