Thursday 22nd June – Club Meeting – Speaker, Professor Nigel Linge, who gave a talk entitled ‘Telstar’

Professor Nigel Linge started his talk with an article written by Arthur C Clarke in a 1945 edition of Wireless World magazine. Arthur had predicted the use of satellite communication long before the first orbiting satellite was launched by Russia in 1957. Nigel then listed the space satellites which had been launched since then, and their function, before Telstar was launched in 1962 – the first ever satellite to offer two-way communication.

Nigel then went on to talk about further developments in satellite communication, including Geo-stationary satellites used for broadcasting, concluding with the latest developments in lower orbit communication satellites which provide internet coverage as well as improved communications. He ended his talk with a look at the number of satellites expected to be in orbit in the near future, and the problems associated with disposing of obsolete items in orbit in space.

Wednesday 21st June – Bowls – Rex Probus v Tatton Probus

Over recent days the weather had been excellent but on the day of the local derby against Tatton Probus the cloud cover made conditions cooler than late. The match as always was tight with Tatton holding a slender lead at the half time break. However, Rex rallied in the second half and was perhaps fortunate to come out of the match with a 89-80 victory.

Wednesday 14th June 2023 – Bowls – Northwich Probus v Rex Probus

A trip to the beautiful surroundings of the Great Budworth Bowling Club for a match against Northwich Probus is always one of the highlights of the season. Why, is a bit of a mystery as form suggests that the green favours the home team. There was to be no exception to the form book as Rex suffered only their second defeat of the season going down by 41 points to 33. Maybe next year.

Tuesday 13th June 2023 – Social – Trip to Ordsall Hall, Salford

Rex members and wives toured the amazing 13th Century Ordsall Hall, a grand medieval half-timbered building which is located almost as a “time capsule” in the middle of the modern bustling Salford Quays development. Salford Council have carried out a £multi-million restoration project, saving this magnificent building for future generations. The tour was conducted by a very knowledgeable guide who brought the 12th Century and its inhabitants back to life for us. It is surrounded by the most beautiful “Knot Garden” with herbs and stunningly-scented old-fashioned roses. The tour ended with a magnificent lunch.

Thursday 8th June 2023 – Club Meeting – Speakers, Judith and Stephen Coyne, who gave a talk entitled ‘Delhi & Kathmandu’.

Judith and Stephen described their journey from Delhi with many photographs of mosques and Sikh temples together with ceremonies on the River Ganges and wildlife at Corbett nature reserve. They crossed the border into Nepal at Tanakpur and members were entertained with more pictures of wildlife in the Royal Bardia National Park and ancient temples in the Kathmandu valley.

Wednesday 7th June 2023 – Summer Lunch – Deanwater Hotel

Ken Akroyd reported that 34 people had attended this Summer Lunch at the Deanwater Hotel. The friendly and efficient staff together the pleasant ambiance of the room ensured a successful meal. Ken thanked Roy Conchie for his excellent organisation of the event.

Tuesday 6th June 2023 – Bowls – Church Hulme Probus v Knutsford Rex

The picturesque green at Cranage Hall was the venue of this weeks bowling fixture, away to Church Hulme Probus. With only one defeat this season Rex knew they could be up to a stiff challenge from their friends down the A50. Church Hulme are able to play a good number of local club bowlers which created an exciting encounter. With many of the pairings producing quite low totals the margin of victory was expected to be close. Perhaps a weakness in the scoring system at the end gave Knutsford Rex a victory by 89 points to 68 which was a very flattering scoreline. However the Church Hulme team took the defeat in good grace and will be looking forward to the return fixture in Knutsford on July 19th.
