With Richard Fenby giving up the post of Social Secretary later this year after a lengthy and successful spell, the Club is looking for a replacement. Richard was also responsible for organising the Club’s annual holidays and at the last meeting President Dick Warwick appealed for a member to take on the task.

Club walkers were given a new area to explore by Andy Whittaker  when he organised a walk  near Combs, not far from Chapel-en-le-Frith. Although hilly and muddy the nine members who took part thoroughly enjoyed the outing. The Flett family – Jim and his wife Evelyn – got together to provide long and short walks  last week based on the Bleeding Wolf  in Scholar Green near Kidsgrove.

The Discussion Group had its first meeting without Mike Harrison, the long-time Secretary/Organiser. He has retired and a new format  was tried  with members asked to provide subjects for discussion off the cuff. A number of topics were raised  and there were some lively debates.

The next Club lunch will be held on May 9.

There were two co-speakers after the meeting, Tony Flood and Peter Ollerton and their subject was “How Rolls Royce Came to Crewe” . Both had spent most of their working life at Crewe. They provided members with many old photographs going back to just before the Second World War when Crewe was chosen  to be the site of Rolls Royce factory to build and test the Merlin aircraft engine which had been developed at the firm’s Derby centre. The site was built in double quick time to become an important part of the war effort. After the war Crewe switched to Rolls Royce  luxury cars and Tony and Peter  recalled their working life there  and the sporting and social activities that were provided by the company.
