The Bowls Group had mixed fortunes when they opened the new outdoor season with a win, a defeat and a draw. They beat Weaver Probus 60-48 but lost to Northwich Probus 116-98 in two away matches but could only draw their home match against Tatton Probus 96-96.

The walkers had bitterly cold but sunny weather for their 6 1/2 miles walk from the Bleeding Wolf in Scholars Green near Kidsgrove covering the Snape Aquaduct and part of the Macclesfield Canal. Some of the walkers even went on  the extra mile to the Harecastle Tunnels but all returned in time to get to Scholars Green where they met up with the short distance walkers  organised by Evelyn Flett.

Jim Flett told the last meeting that the IT Group had discussed the cost of broadband and found that the prices varied from £38 to £75. Jim said he would produce  a table of suppliers including some of the less known names.

The Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday May 7 when the topic will be UK Railways.

The speaker at the last meeting was Anthony Barret whose subject was Cheshire Airfields going back to the time when the Royal Flying Corps took over a racecourse and a polo ground at Hooton to make an airfield  for training pilots. It was later used for private planes before the RAF took it over in  1936 until it  closed in 1957.

Mr Barret went on to describe airfields that were used at Stretton, Calveley, Speake, Woodford, Burtonwood, Poulton, Cranage and Tatton, which was used training parachutists.
