Knutsford Rex Probus Club – getting back to normal!

Knutsford Rex Probus Club held its Annual General Meeting at Mere & Tabley Community Centre on 24thFebruary at which John Beaumont was installed as Chairman. Richard Fenby, President, presided over the meeting. He thanked outgoing Chairman Jim Flett for leading the Club during a fraught two years which he described as the most difficult period in the Club’s history since its inception in 1968.

John Beaumont thanked Jim Flett for handing the club over in good order and expressed the hope that the coming year would see the full resumption of its wide range of regular face to face activities which were curtailed by the restrictions of the pandemic. He expressed the hope that the successful trip to the Lowry Theatre to see the touring production of Private Lives would be the first of a number of trips and visits already planned for the rest of the year. Mr Beaumont added that he was honoured to have been elected as Chairman of the club and he looked forward to continuing its long tradition of companionable good fellowship and of extending a warm welcome to new members, as well as to wives and partners, who participate in most of the social activities and outings. He was encouraged that four new members had recently joined the club and that several others were in the process of doing so.

The speaker at the meeting was Club Member, David Howard, who spoke about “D-Day’s Forgotten Man” Admiral Sir Bertram Home Ramsay. After a distinguished naval career, the Admiral was responsible for the planning of the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and of the D-Day landings in 1944. Unfortunately, he was later killed in an air crash in January 1945 and is now hardly remembered despite his remarkable contribution to our success in the war.
