Bowls

The Bowls Section participate in Crown Green Bowling throughout the Bowling Season (April to September).

All ‘Home’ matches are played at Knutsford Bowling Club (KBC)

Knutsford Bowling Club
Mereheath Lane
Knutsford
Cheshire
WA16 6SL

As such, Probus Bowls Team Members are expected to join KBC and pay the appropriate membership fee, which is currently £28.00 per year.

Matches, ‘Home’ and ‘Away’, normally take place on Wednesday afternoons against other locally situated Probus Clubs. Matches are split into two equal sessions with four games played in each session. Refreshments (tea, coffee & biscuits) are taken at ‘half time’.

Games are played in pairs with eight players being used in each session. Hence, a full team consists of 16 players (maximum); however, any number of players less than 16 down to 8 players (minimum) can be utilised, but, in this instance, some or all will have to play twice.

The atmosphere during matches is friendly but with a competitive edge as would be expected at any level of similar amateur sporting contests.

One match each season is played against Knutsford Rotary Club. This is an evening fixture, usually held on the first Wednesday in August, and is more of a social occasion than Probus matches with finger buffet type refreshments at ‘half time’.

At the end of the season the Bowlers take part in the ‘Rex/Probus Bowls Handicap’ competition whence the winner receives the handsome trophy to treasure until the following year.

Regular practice sessions take place every Monday afternoon (or Tuesday mornings following a bank holiday Monday).

Any Knutsford Probus Club member is entitled to sign up to play bowls. New players of all ages and levels of skill, ability, experience, etc. are warmly welcomed.

PRACTICE:- EVERY MONDAY @ 1.30PM EXCEPT BANK HOLIDAY WEEKS WHEN IT WILL BE ON THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY MORNING.

BOWLS SECTION REPORT – 2023 SEASON

Team 2023 LR back row:- Bruce Snowden, Jim Flett, John Coleman, John Newhouse, Bob Brown. Front Row:- Alan Allcock, Terry Parkinson, Graham Parr. Captain Roger Collins holding the Tatton Trophy.

This year we have had a very busy bowling season with a virtually full fixtures list, featuring both home and away matches against all our usual opposition Probus teams. Exceptions to this were where two matches were called off either due to us or the opposition not being able to raise a team and two matches were called off due to bad weather; however, we did manage to fit one of them in on a blank date, later in the season.

The annual match against Tatton Probus for the George Tyror/Knutsford Probus Clubs Cup was contested at home on Wednesday 09th August and which we managed to win, by 1 point only, having lost the trophy last year by 1 point only – Revenge is sweet.

In addition to the foregoing, our annual match against the Knutsford Rotary Club was played on 16th August, this year, at Knutsford Bowling Club and, as usual, we had an enjoyable evening, hosted this year by Rotary. We recorded our customary win, scoring 99 points to their 61. In addition, and for the first time, we now have something to play for as the Rotary Club president, Andrew Lloyd-Green, very generously, presented us with a magnificent Claret Jug Trophy. This gesture we are very grateful for and is much appreciated.

The Team End of Season Results are as follows:-

Matches played       = 19 : (Won 16 : Lost 3).

Games played          = 136 : (Won 78 : Lost 54 : Drawn 4).

Points tally (For)      = 1512 = 920 (Home) + 592 (Away).

  (Against)   = 1201 = 717 (Home) + 484 (Away).

Our annual Club Handicap/Knockout competition, played on 20th September, was won, for the second year running, by Ken Ackroyd with Neil Stott as runner up – Congratulations Ken.

I would now like to take this opportunity to thank all those bowlers who turned up for matches, practice sessions, etc. throughout the season; we could not have done it without them. In addition, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continue to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition.

The annual Walkers v Bowlers so called Fun Day turned out to be no fun at all as it had to be cancelled mainly due to inclement weather on the day – We look forward to better conditions next year.

On the evening of 15th November 11 members of the bowls squad plus 2 non-bowlers attended and enjoyed our annual end of season Bowls Section dinner at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton – Thanks go, again, to Terry Parkinson and others for their efforts in organising this very enjoyable event.

Following the end of the outdoor bowling season we have been, and are continuing to be, involved in monthly sessions of indoor bowling at Owley Wood Club, Weaverham and, as with years gone by, this activity is proving to be very enjoyable.

Team 2022 : Standing (l-r): Jim Flett; Peter Clegg; Ken Ackroyd; John Newhouse; Graham Parr; Roger Collins (capt); Mike Cooper; Terry Parkinson; Bruce Snowdon. Kneeling: Neil Stott; Alan Allcock.

Following the adverse effects of Covid on the last 2 years outdoor bowling activities, this year we have had a very busy bowling season with a virtually full fixtures list, featuring both home and away matches against all our usual opposition Probus teams. Exceptions to this were where one match was called off due the opposition not being able to raise a team and two matches which were called off by the opposition due to bad weather. Additionally, one home match did not take place due to the opposition not turning up; however, we did manage to fit them in on a blank date, later in the season.

The annual match against Tatton Probus for the George Tyror/Knutsford Probus Clubs Cup was contested away on 8th August and which we managed to lose, by 1 point only, thereby ending our 2-year tenure of the trophy.

In addition to the foregoing, our annual match against the Knutsford Rotary Club was played on 27th July at Warford Park Bowling Club and, as usual, we had an enjoyable evening, hosted this year by us. We recorded our customary win, scoring 76 points to their 70 (much closer than in the past).

The Team End of Season Results are as follows:-

Matches played              = 19 : (Won 11 : Lost 8).

Games played                 = 153 : (Won 80 : Lost 68 : Drawn 5).

Points tally (For)            = 1589 = 697 (Home) + 892 (Away).

  (Against)         = 1469 = 630 (Home) + 839 (Away).

Our annual Club Handicap/Knockout competition, played on 21st September, was won by Ken Ackroyd with myself as runner up – Congratulations Ken.

I would now like to take this opportunity to thank all those bowlers who turned up for matches, practice sessions, etc. throughout the season; we couldn’t have done it without them. In addition, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continued to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition.

The annual Walkers v Bowlers ‘Fun Day’ was held on Thursday 29th September centred on the Railway Inn, Mobberley. This consisted of a morning walk then lunch in the pub and afterwards a bowls competition which was won by Mike Cooper and myself. Thanks go to Jim Flett for organising the event.

On the evening of 16th November 10 members of the bowls squad plus 2 non-bowlers attended and enjoyed our annual end of season Bowls Section dinner at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton – Thanks go, again, to Terry Parkinson and others for their efforts in organising this very enjoyable event.

BOWLS SECTION REPORT – 2021 SEASON

Despite the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic still lingering on, the 2021 bowling season was far from being a complete disaster. As a result, this year, the good news in this report somewhat outweighs the bad news.

Firstly, the not so good news:- Due to Covid restrictions in force at the start of the season, the first 6 scheduled matches had to be cancelled as we were not allowed to start playing outdoors until the week commencing Monday 15th May.

Now, for the good news:- Further to the delayed start of the season and despite some Covid restrictions still being in force, this year we have had a busy bowling season with an almost full fixtures list featuring both home and away matches against all our usual opposition Probus teams, with the exception of Northwich Probus who cried off at a late stage in the proceedings due to them not being able to raise a team. However, one of the dates we filled in with an extra practice session and the other by playing Tatton Probus who stepped in at the last minute. This was not a problem as we usually play Tatton 3 times in a normal season anyway, with one of these matches being contested for the George Tyror Knutsford Probus clubs Cup which this year was played on 11th August and which we managed to win, thereby retaining the trophy.

In addition to the foregoing, our annual match against the Knutsford Rotary Club was played on 28th July at Warford Park and, as usual, we had an enjoyable evening, hosted this year by the Rotary Club. We recorded our customary win, scoring 94 points to their 26.

The Team End of Season Results are as follows:-

Matches played                                =          18 : [Won 11 : Lost 7].

Games played                                  =          133 : [Won 72 : Lost 61].

Points tally (For)                               =          1480 = [745 (Home) + 735 (Away)].

        (Against)                        =          1333 = [646 (Home) + 687 (Away)].

Our annual Club Handicap/Knockout competition, played on 22nd September, was won by Peter Clegg, with Alan Allcock as runner up – Congratulations Peter and Alan.

Peter receives the trophy from Chairman Jim Flett

I would now like to take this opportunity to thank all those bowlers who turned up for matches, practice sessions, etc. throughout the season; we couldn’t have done it without them.

In addition, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continued to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition.

On the evening of 17th November 2021, 10 members of the bowls squad attended and enjoyed our annual end of season Bowls section dinner, at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton – Thanks go, again, to Terry Parkinson and others for their efforts in organising this very enjoyable event.

Following the end of the outdoor bowling season we have been, and are continuing to be, involved in monthly sessions of indoor bowling at Owley Wood Club and, as with years gone by, this activity is proving to be very enjoyable.

BOWLS SECTION REPORT – 2020 SEASON

You will not be surprised when I report that, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the 2020 bowling season was, basically, a non-event without being a complete disaster. As a result, the bad news in this report somewhat outweighs the good news.

Firstly, the bad news: – Despite me having spent many hours, over the 2019/20 close season, in arranging 25 or so bowls fixtures to be played over the 2020 open season, we were, disappointingly, due to Covid 19 restrictions compliance, prevented from playing any of them.

In addition, as a result of Cheshire’s recent elevation through the Tiers to full ‘lockdown’, we have been unable to take part in any indoor bowling sessions at Owley Wood Club over this winter period.

Secondly, the good news: – During the 2020 summer months, whilst under the previous Covid 19 ‘Medium risk (Tier 1) restrictions, we were able to turn up at the bowling club for 2 hour practice sessions on Monday afternoons whilst, also, complying with the Knutsford Bowling Club Covid 19 rules.

Also, on Monday 21 September, and in compliance with all Covid 19 restrictions/rules, we were able to compete in our annual Club Handicap/Knockout competition, which was won by Terry Parkinson with Alan Allcock as runner up – Congratulations Terry and Alan. I would now like to thank all those bowlers who turned up on the Monday afternoons, we couldn’t have done it without them.

Terry holding the Club Handicap Trophy

In addition to the foregoing, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continued to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition despite the unprecedented times we were, and are still, experiencing at the moment.

On a sad note, I must express the heartfelt sorrow of the bowls squad at the loss to bowling, through serious illness, of our friend and bowling team regular Don Johnson.  His attendance will be sadly missed by the Club in general and the Bowls section in particular; we hope his health continues to improve and wish him well for the future.

Again, due to Covid 19 restrictions, the 2020 end of season Bowls section annual dinner at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton did not happen this year.

At the time of writing, the 2021 fixtures list is more than 65% complete so, when it is fully complete, let’s hope circumstances improve for next season and we get to play all, or even some, of the matches scheduled.

Roger Collins (Bowls Secretary)

BOWLS SECTION REPORT – 2019 SEASON

As in previous years our special thanks go to many members of the squad (too many to mention) for providing regular support, attendance, etc. at home/away matches and practice sessions throughout the season. In addition, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continue to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition.
On a sad note I must express our heartfelt sorrow at the passing of our friend and bowling team regular Mike Harrison – He will be sadly missed by the Club in general and the Bowls section in particular – May he rest in peace.

This year we have had a busy bowling season with an almost full fixtures list, however 4 matches had to be called off due to bad weather:- viz Church Hulme, Away, 11th June – rearranged for 10th September: Rotary twice rained off – not rearranged and Appleton, at Home, 28th August – not rearranged. This resulted in us having played 22 matches against 9 Probus Clubs + 2 matches against a non-Probus team (High Legh Bowling Club).

Our annual evening match against the Knutsford Rotary Club was rained off, rearranged for another night and rained off again –It not being possible to rearrange the fixture again it was abandoned for 2019 and will resume in 2020, weather permitting. Note:- As it was their turn to provide half time refreshments in 2019 it is still their turn to pay in 2020.
The annual match against Knutsford Tatton Probus Club, for the George Tyror Knutsford Probus Clubs Cup, was played, away at Crosstown BC on 13th August – I am pleased to report, that, this time, we reclaimed the Trophy having lost it in 2017 & 2018 – Well done Team.
The Team End of Season Results are as follows:-
Matches played = 22 : [Won 13 : Lost 8 : Drawn 1].
Games played = 181 : [Won 100 : Lost 78 : Drawn 3].
Points tally (For) = 2010 : [1005 (Home) – 1005 (Away)].
(Against) = 1811: [849 (Home) – 962 (Away)].

Early season team line up.

It will be determined from the above that we had a very good season in 2019, certainly one of the best since I took over as Bowls secretary in 2014, and I only have the team to thank for their efforts and dedication in achieving these excellent results. For this 2019 season, as with last season, there has been plenty of commitment and enthusiasm from the team, and we have done very well despite a notable depletion in the number of players in the squad over the last few years. I can report, however, that we are continuing to recruit a few more players, primarily from new members of the Club but we still need one or two more to ease the pressure so, if any Knutsford Rex Probus Club member, not already registered, is interested in playing for our bowls team, or fancies trying their arm, new players of all levels of skill, ability and experience will be warmly welcomed.

The Club Handicap Trophy, this year, was won by Roger Collins, with Ken Ackroyd as runner up.

Roger Collins receives the Club Handicap Trophy from Rex Chairman David Bryant.

On the evening of 21st November 16 of us had a highly successful Bowls section annual dinner at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton. Thanks again to Terry Parkinson and Scott Martin for their efforts in organising this very enjoyable event.

Following the end of the outdoor bowling season we have been, and are continuing to be, involved in monthly sessions of indoor bowling at Owley Wood Club and, as with years gone by, these are proving to be very enjoyable mornings out, particularly enhanced by the Carvery lunches afterwards.

BOWLS SECTION REPORT – 2018 SEASON

As in previous years our special thanks go to many members of the squad (too many to mention) for providing regular support, attendance, etc. at home/away matches and practice sessions throughout the season. In addition, our appreciation once again, goes to the Knutsford Bowling Club, who continue to maintain the green and club facilities in excellent condition.

This year we have had a busy bowling season with an almost full fixtures list with only 2 blank weeks (due to the Macclesfield 1. Probus Bowls squad having to drop out because they were no longer able to raise a team). Also 2 matches had to be called off due to bad weather. This resulted in us having played 21 matches against 8 Probus Clubs + 2 matches against a non-Probus team (High Legh BC) and 1 evening match against the Knutsford Rotary Club. The two blank weeks were filled by playing internal ‘Round Robin’ competitions – Thanks go to Terry Parkinson for his efforts in arranging these events – For the end of season results see below.

Our annual match against the Knutsford Rotary Club was played on 1st August at Warford Park and, as usual, we had an enjoyable evening, hosted this year by Knutsford Rex. We recorded our customary win scoring 111 points to their 37.

The annual match against Knutsford Tatton Probus Club, for the George Tyror Knutsford Probus Clubs Cup, was played, at home, on 15th August. This year, unfortunately, we again came ‘runners up’ losing by 88 points to 111 – We will make every effort to get the cup back next year away at Cross Town BC.

The Team End of Season Results, including the Rotary, High Legh BC and Cup matches mentioned above, are as follows:-

Matches played = 21 : (Won 15 : Lost 6 : Drawn 0).

Games played     = 170 : (Won 98 : Lost 68 : Drawn 4).

Points tally          = 1797 (For) : 1638 (Against).

It will be determined from the above that we had a very good season in 2018, certainly the best since I took over as Bowls secretary in 2014 and I only have the team to thank for their efforts and dedication in achieving these excellent results. This 2018 season, as with last season, there has been plenty of commitment and enthusiasm from the team, and we have done very well despite a notable depletion in the number of players in the squad.

The Club Handicap Trophy, this year, was won by Terry Parkinson, with myself as runner up.

On the evening of 21st November 15 of us had a highly successful Bowls section annual dinner at the Dun Cow Inn, Ollerton – Thanks go to Terry Parkinson and Scott Martin for their efforts in organising this very enjoyable event.
