22nd December 2023 – Funeral of Pat Mearing [Nov 1927 – December 2023]
Pat’s funeral took place at Vale Royal Crematorium with several members in attendance. Pat had been a a member since February 2010 and undertook the position of Press Officer until is health deteriorated. Pat was one of more senior members of the club having is 96th birthday in November.
21st December 2023 – Walk/Social – Angel Knutsford
A happy group of the Walking Section plus other invited members.
The planned walk in Tatton was cancelled due to severe high winds causing the park to close its gates. The walkers plus other members adjourned to the Angel Hotel in Knutsford to enjoy a Christmas Lunch of exceptional standard.
21st December 2023 – Funeral of Dennis Duffill [March 1927 – December 2023]
The funeral took place at Vale Royal Crematorium of a most valued member Dennis Duffill at the age of 96. Dennis joined Probus in August 2018 and was a regular attendee at our Meir Club meetings. Dennis passed in the early hours of the 1st December after suffering breathing difficulties.
14th December 2023 – Club Meeting – Speaker, Mr Alan Eastwood, who gave a talk entitled ‘History of Pub Signs’.
Alan recounted some interesting facts concerning pubs: The Romans set up the first pubs; The first brewers were women; In 1393 Richard 11 ordained that publicans must hang out a sign; The most popular pub names today are the Crown and the Red Lion. Alan then gave examples of the derivation of pub names including those of religious origin, heraldic, trade associations, games and sports and animals before explaining the origins of names of local pubs.
8th December 2023 – Social – Christmas at Tatton Concert
Several members enjoyed the evening listening to the music and singing of the highest order. A wonderful evening.
7th December 2023 – Walk – Grappenhall
Starting from the the Parr Arms in Grappenhall seven intrepid walkers faced Storm Elin to complete the 4.25 mile walk around the area, led by David Hartshorn. Despite the weather all arrived safely back at the pub to be rewarded with an excellent lunch by a warming log fire.
Friday 1st December – Funeral of member David Taylor
David Taylor took his final journey to Vale Royal Cemetery today with several members in attendance. David was a valued member of the Rex Club over a period from November 2017 until his death in mid November. David’s wife, Joyce, and family invited everyone to the wake at Mere & Tabley Community Club to remember with fondness the life David.
Joyce will always be welcome at all Rex Social Events over the coming years.
