David Hill spoke at the Club’s meeting on 24th October 2019 on “The story of Gilbert and Sullivan”. David’s knowledge was impressive and he shared musical extracts from over 100 years ago. He explained how Mr W S Gilbert had met Mr A Sullivan and how they went into business with impresario Mr Richard D’Oyly Carte who built the Savoy Hotel and the Savoy Theatre. Together they created 14 operas for which Gilbert wrote the libretti and Sullivan composed the music with memorable melodies. Their most famous productions are The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. Separately, Sullivan composed the music for the 19th Century Hymn, “Onward, Christian Soldiers”.
At the start of the meeting, reports on the Club’s many activities were provided. In late November the bowlers hold their annual dinner at the Dun Cow and in the closed season they have arranged indoor bowls once a month at Owley Wood Club in Weaverham followed by lunch.
The most recent walk was at Bickerton and Raw Edge with lunch at the Bickerton Poacher. There are two walks before the next Club meeting – around Bollington with lunch at the Church House Inn and at Peover with lunch at The Dog.
The annual golf match with the two other local Probus clubs took place at Knutsford Golf Club on 10th October. One of our members, Neil Stott, won the individual prize and the Club came second overall.
The bridge group had a great evening at Knutsford Golf club on 25th October.
The discussion group meets shortly to discuss the collapse of Thomas Cook.
