Wednesday 29th June 2022 – Bowls – Knutsford Rex v Northwich Weaver Probus

Although the day started with sunshine the forecast was for heavy showers. The Knutsford Bowling Club green was looking in excellent condition and a good afternoons bowling was anticipated against the members of Weaver Probus.

The first half was played in sunshine with a occasional showers and most matches were very competitive. As the second half started ominous clouds accumulated and eventually the rain started. It then looked to have eased so the bowling could resume but it was not long before the heavy rain restarted with a vengeance. It was obvious that the amount of rain on the green was going to finish the match and so the captains agreed to tot up the points for the eventual result. As the points were added the result was announced, Knutsford Rex 87 Weaver Probus 85. Lucky Knutsford?

His fearlessness and ability to remain calm in the face of danger pushed the boundaries of landing faster and heavier aircraft on aircraft carriers. His wartime experiences were fraught with danger and his fluency in German resulted in him helping to liberate Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and interrogating Hermann Goering and other members of the Nazi regime. A remarkable life.
