A PAGE TO REMEMBER OUR PAST MEMBERS

Peter Clegg 6th August 1940 – 18th August 2025

Peter was born on 6th August 1940 in Oldham, and has sadly left us at the age of 85.

Peter moved from Oldham to Blackpool as a youngster to be by the coast due to his Father’s TB diagnosis. He went to school and technical college in Blackpool which provided him with an education to follow his Father into the banking world: Initially with Williams Deacons, later Williams & Glyns and latterly the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Peter married in Blackpool after meeting Margaret at a dance in the Tower Ballroom.
They lived in Lytham St. Anne’s and had 2 daughters, Lynne and Laura.

The family moved to Cheshire with Peter’s promotion and have lived in KNUTSFORD for over 50 years. He worked at banks in Levenshulme & Sale before his elevation to Manager status at Alderley Edge and then in Altrincham.

Peter loved his summer holidays and the family often flew to Spain and Portugal (quite unusual in the early days). As a typical banker, He didn’t like going in the school holidays because of the enormous cost but because it was also very busy! Peter adored his Red wine – especially the Italian Reds!

Peter loved his jazz music as many of you may know, even burning his own CDs. He also loved films and both Peter’s daughters enjoy that deep interest & enthusiasm for films too.

Peter loved politics – sometimes rather over enthusiastically. He was an avid Telegraph reader – he repeatedly told his family to read it as they would learn a lot but his daughter Lynne says they totally ignored his advice!

Peter was fiercely independent – right until the end. After his wife, Margaret’s death, Peter continued being very domesticated – ironing, washing, cooking. Peter always turned away any offers of help. He was always immaculate and remained positive and optimistic even during those weeks in the Macclesfield hospital.

Peter was very sociable and had many great friends from being involved with groups and organisations, he enjoyed bowling for a good few years but his bad back & legs got the better of him!

Peter’s daughter tells us he was very fond of Rex Probus and enjoyed his association with all our members and cherished many wonderful memories. Peter shared lots of stories and jokes with his family.      Peter joined Knutsford Rex Probus in November 1992 at the tender age of 52 ??  (He presumably lied about his age?)

After Anthony Whitworth resurrected ‘Members’ Jokes’, Peter made many interventions in the ‘Any other Business’ section of our Agendas. He became our Chairman during 2006 and 2007 and our incumbent President last year.

I’m sure Peter is already telling his namesake, St. Peter, one of his most eye-rolling and groan-inspiring jokes’.        Peter will be sadly missed!

Derek Thompson 7th May 1932 – 1st January 2024

Derek joined Rex Probus on the 24th March 2011 and attended meetings regularly until ill health curtailed the number of visits. Derek died peacefully at Sharston House Nursing Home with his family at his side. A proud Yorkshireman and will be sadly missed by his wife Marge, family and friends.

Francis Patrick “Pat” Mearing 25th November 1927 – 5th December 2023

Pat joined Rex Probus on the 11th February 2010. He was a strong supporter of the club and was for many years used his journalistic skills as our Press Officer. He regularly contributed on behalf of Rex to the “Clubs Page” of the Knutsford Guardian. Pat will be sadly missed by his wife Therese and sons Tim, Dom & Brendan.

Dennis Richard Duffill 10th March 1927 – 1st December 2023

Dennis died peacefully in hospital on the 1st December. He joined Rex Probus on the 23rd August 2018. He was former Managing Director of local car dealership Mangoletsi.

David Taylor 18th March 1945 – November 2023

At our 14th December 2023 meeting Colin Hardman gave a moving and heartfelt tribute to his friend of 62 years noting their times together, how he was proud to have been his best man at his wedding to Joyce and their many holidays together. Colin will miss David dearly.

Neil Stott followed by outlining David’s impressive career working all over the world as an engineer in the oil and gas industries. Neil noted that David had worked in his office and produced drawings which were accurate to within 2 thousandths of an inch. A lovely man.
